Scheduled international flights use Terminal 3 and domestic flights Terminal 1, two separate buildings on the same airport. This is what happens between the aircraft door and the road south, including the small-hours arrivals from the Gulf.
Terminal 3: international
Opened in March 2017, with architecture inspired by traditional Kerala design. International flights arrive and leave here: in September 2026 that meant Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Doha, Muscat, Kuwait, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, as well as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
Terminal 1: domestic
All domestic flights, from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai and the rest of India, use Terminal 1, renovated and reopened in December 2018. There is no immigration on a domestic arrival, so you are usually out sooner.
Terminal 2: business jets
A separate 40,000 sq ft terminal for domestic and international business jet flights, with its own car parking. Arriving by private jet? Say so in the request, as T2 is a separate building from the passenger terminals.
Flying back to the Gulf at night
On a typical night in September 2026, flights to Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Muscat, Dubai, Jeddah, Kuwait, Doha and Bahrain were timetabled to leave between about 9pm and 6am. A pickup from home is timed back from your check-in cut-off with the traffic allowed for, and at a home or hotel the chauffeur waits 15 minutes from the scheduled pickup time, so have the bags by the door.
Seeing someone off
When a son, a daughter or a parent flies back after the holidays, the whole family often comes along. A van takes five to seven people with six to eight bags, and a stop to collect a relative on the way can be added as an extra. Child seats must be asked for when you book, not on the night.
Landing from the Gulf before dawn
That same night, flights from Jeddah, Kuwait, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Bahrain and Riyadh were timetabled to land between about 1am and 6am. The booking is timed to your flight, the desk is awake, and any late-night charge was already in the price you paid.
Check the terminal on your ticket before you travel, and tell the booking desk which one when you request the quote: Terminal 3 for international, Terminal 1 for domestic. If the airline retimes or moves your flight, send the new details straight away.
