Tolls, where they apply, are either included in it or shown in it as an additional charge, and heavy traffic does not change the quoted price.
When you land
Bahrain International has one passenger terminal for scheduled flights, and every passenger whose journey ends in Bahrain takes the same route through it: immigration, the belt, past the arrivals duty free shop, then customs and out. Here is that sequence, and what to have ready at each point.
Citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries need no visa for Bahrain; every other visitor does. The official eVisa portal, evisa.gov.bh, lists which passports can get a visa on arrival and which can apply for an eVisa online before travelling, so check yours before you leave home. Send us your flight number when you book: we track the flight, and a delay moves the pickup with it.
Signs lead from the aircraft to passport control, where you need your passport and any visa papers, an eVisa included, to hand. The arrivals level has eight eGates, which identify you by face or fingerprint. They take Bahraini citizens and residents, GCC nationals with e-passports, and visitors on a multiple-entry visa once they have made a first entry through a staffed counter. All other passengers use the staffed immigration counters.
Signs above each of the eight carousels name the flight whose bags are on it, and a Baggage Services desk in the reclaim area deals with bags that are missing or damaged. The Arrivals Duty Free shop comes before customs, where you take the Green Channel with nothing to declare or the Red Channel with goods to declare. Time spent in the queues and at the belt counts towards your chauffeur’s waiting time, so if a lost bag will hold you up, tell the booking desk, which answers 24 hours a day. Waiting beyond the included time can carry an additional charge.
Your chauffeur is named before pickup, and the booking desk tells you where to meet. Currency exchange, cash machines and shops selling local SIM cards are in the arrivals area if you need any of them first. Keep your phone switched on: a passenger who has not reached the meeting point within the waiting time and cannot be contacted is treated as a no-show.
From the terminal, Airport Avenue leads to the Shaikh Isa bin Salman Causeway, a 2.5 km crossing that lands in Manama’s Diplomatic Area, near Bahrain Bay. When traffic calls for it, the Shaikh Hamad Causeway is the other way into the centre, and Juffair can also be reached from Hidd over the Shaikh Khalifa Causeway, which comes ashore there. Muharraq’s old town and the Amwaj Islands need no crossing into Manama at all. Whichever way the traffic sends you, it does not change the quoted price.
The drive times on this page are approximate. They come from map routing between the terminal and each area, widened for ordinary traffic, so allow more in the morning and evening peaks. Bahrain’s visa rules can change, so check the official eVisa portal before you fly.
Where you are going
Distances are by road from the terminal. The times are typical ranges rather than promises, and depend on traffic and the time of day.
The Diplomatic Area, Bahrain Bay and the old souq behind Bab al Bahrain are about 8 km from the airport, usually 15 to 25 minutes. Seef, the district of offices, flats and shopping malls built on reclaimed land to the west, is about 12 km, usually 20 to 30 minutes.
Juffair, south of the centre and home to the Al Fateh Grand Mosque, and neighbouring Adliya, with its galleries, cafés and restaurants, are both about 9 to 10 km away. Allow roughly 15 to 25 minutes, depending on which causeway is flowing more freely.
The old town is only 3 to 4 km from the terminal, usually 10 to 15 minutes. Its Pearling Path, a 3.5 km trail through a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2012, runs from the Bu Mahir seashore to the Siyadi complex. The Amwaj Islands, reclaimed off Muharraq’s north-east coast, are about 9 km by road, usually 15 to 20 minutes.
Riffa, in the Southern Governorate and home to Riffa Fort and the Royal Golf Club, is about 25 to 30 km away, usually 30 to 45 minutes. Sakhir lies further south-west: the Bahrain International Circuit there is about 38 to 40 km away, usually 40 to 55 minutes, and the University of Bahrain has its main campus in the same area. Often, yes. Metered airport taxis work around the clock, with signs to them from baggage reclaim, and public buses leave from the arrivals level: the A1 and A2 routes both call at Manama Bus Terminal, and the A2 carries on to Seef. A pre-booked transfer suits you better with a family, heavy bags or an address away from the bus routes, because your chauffeur is named before pickup and you have a full quote before you pay.
Yes, if your passport lets you enter Bahrain. GCC citizens need no visa; anyone else should check on evisa.gov.bh whether they can get a visa on arrival or an eVisa online before they travel. Allow time for immigration when you arrive, and for check-in and security when you come back. Muharraq’s old town, usually 10 to 15 minutes by road, is an easy place to spend a few hours, and an hourly chauffeur is quoted for the time you have.
