Which side of the Bosphorus
Istanbul Airport is on the European side. A drop-off on the Asian side means a tolled Bosphorus crossing, by bridge or by the Eurasia Tunnel, and any toll charges are shown in your quote before you pay.
How far from Arnavutköy
The airport sits north-west of the city centre near Lake Terkos, roughly 40 to 50 km by road from Taksim or Sultanahmet. An address further out along the coast or across the city changes the quote.

A run between IST and SAW is quoted as one cross-city journey, with any toll charges for the Bosphorus crossing shown before you pay. Send both flight numbers with the request so the quote fits the connection.

Landing at Istanbul Airport
Istanbul Airport is a single terminal in Arnavutköy, well north-west of the city centre, and the distance from aircraft door to kerb is part of the journey. Here is what to expect between landing and meeting your chauffeur.

Before you land
Check your visa position before you fly. Türkiye has run an official e-Visa system at evisa.gov.tr since 2013, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says eligible visitors can get one online in about three minutes. Make sure your booking carries your flight number so it can be tracked.

Passport control
International flights arrive at concourses A, B, D and F, and from a far gate the walk to passport control can take a while.

Baggage and customs
Bags come next, in the reclaim hall. At customs, the airport says you can leave through the green line if what you carry is within the allowances; anything over them has to be declared.

Meeting your chauffeur
Your voucher, sent 24 hours before pickup, gives your chauffeur’s name and the vehicle, so keep it to hand on your phone. The 30-minute wait counts from your flight's actual arrival time, not from when you clear immigration, so if queues or reclaim are slow, keep your phone on and reachable. On the way
The airport sits on the O-7 Northern Marmara Motorway, a toll road that also crosses the Bosphorus on the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge towards the Asian side. By the airport bus routes, Taksim is about 48 km away and Sultanahmet about 50 km, and Istanbul traffic decides how long that takes.

One terminal, five concourses
Domestic and international flights share a single terminal. Concourse G is domestic-only; A, B, D and F handle international flights.
Metro M11
The station is underground and signposted from the terminal. The line runs from Gayrettepe, for the M2, through the airport to Halkalı, for Marmaray, and has been open end to end since June 2026. In March 2025, before the line was finished, Türkiye’s transport ministry put the journey from Halkalı to the airport at about 30 minutes.
Buses and taxis
Havaist runs 11 routes into the city and IETT runs five, both from transportation floor -2. Metered taxis in orange, turquoise and black classes work 24 hours a day from stands by exit gates 9 and 13, with tolls and bridge fees paid on top.

IST
Istanbul Airport (IST)
Istanbul Airport opened in October 2018 and took over all scheduled passenger flights from Atatürk Airport on 6 April 2019, along with the IST code. It is the hub of Turkish Airlines and handled more than 84 million passengers in 2025, close behind Heathrow in ACI World’s final ranking, published in July 2026. It lies in Arnavutköy near Lake Terkos, well to the north-west of the historic centre.

Sabiha Gökçen International Airport (SAW)
Istanbul’s second airport opened in 2001 in Pendik, on the Asian side of the Bosphorus, about 40 km from Kadıköy and 50 km from Taksim by its own figures. Istanbul Airport is on the other side of the water, about 85 km away by road, and the direct airport bus between the two is timed at about two hours; on separate tickets you also collect your bags and check in again, as the questions below explain. The M4 metro has served the terminal since October 2022, Havabus coaches run to Kadıköy and Taksim, and the Havaist bus to Istanbul Airport boards on the open car park level across from arrivals.

Istanbul airport transfer questions
My ticket just says Istanbul. Which airport is it?
Check the three-letter code. IST is Istanbul Airport in Arnavutköy on the European side, the main subject of this page. SAW is Sabiha Gökçen, a separate airport in Pendik on the Asian side, about 85 km from IST by road. Atatürk Airport, which used to be IST, lost its scheduled passenger flights in April 2019 and now carries the code ISL. Give us the right airport when you book, because a pick-up at the other one is a different journey.
How long will my chauffeur wait when I land at Istanbul Airport?
30 minutes from your flight's actual arrival time, not the scheduled one, because your flight is tracked. At Istanbul Airport the walk to passport control and the reclaim hall can take a while, so keep your phone switched on. Waiting beyond 30 minutes can carry an additional charge, and a passenger who has not reached the meeting point within the waiting time and cannot be contacted is treated as a no-show.
What if my flight is delayed?
Your flight is tracked and the 30-minute wait runs from its actual arrival time, so a late landing is already allowed for. If your plans change before you travel, the standard policy accepts changes and cancellations up to 48 hours before the flight, with any costs already incurred deducted; a few airports and services differ, and the Terms set out the full policy.
Can you take me to the Asian side of Istanbul?
Yes. Istanbul Airport is on the European side, so an Asian-side address means crossing the Bosphorus: by the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge on the O-7 motorway, by one of the two older bridges in the city, or through the Eurasia Tunnel. Every one of those crossings is tolled, and any toll charges are included in the full quote you receive before you pay.
How far is Istanbul Airport from Sabiha Gökçen, and how long does the transfer take?
About 85 km by road, from the European side to the Asian side, and the public airport bus between them is timed at around two hours. By car the time depends mostly on traffic and on which Bosphorus crossing the route takes, so leave a generous gap between the two flights.
I have separate tickets from IST to SAW. What do I need to know?
Plan it as two journeys. On separate tickets you collect your bags at the first airport and check in again at the second, and if you arrive from abroad you clear passport control at the first airport before you can leave it, so your visa position applies even though you are only passing through. Book it as a terminal to terminal transfer and send both flight numbers: the desk needs your onward departure so the connection window is protected.
Do I need a visa for Türkiye?
That depends on your passport. Türkiye's official e-Visa system at evisa.gov.tr lets eligible visitors apply online, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says it takes about three minutes. Check your own requirement and sort it out before you fly.
Is there public transport from Istanbul Airport?
Yes. The M11 metro runs from the airport to Gayrettepe for the M2 and, since June 2026, through to Halkalı for Marmaray. Havaist buses run 11 routes and IETT buses five, both from transportation floor -2, and metered taxis work around the clock. A private transfer makes more sense with heavy luggage, a group, or an address away from the rail lines.
